Journaling

I only have a few pages left in my current journal, so I went out to buy a new one yesterday.  I have a little tradition when it's time for a new journal:  I go to the bookstore-- Barnes & Noble, usually-- since they sell the spiral-bound blank books I like (in the art section)- and purchase a journal and a fun magazine.  This is the only time I ever buy magazines- and I buy it only to go home and cut it up, which seems rather silly, I realize.  But it's a treat for me because I fill those blank journal pages with pictures I've clipped and then I get to enjoy them for the next several months.

some blank journal pages
I spend time every single day- with few exceptions- writing in my journal, so I like it to look pretty.  This is my best effort.  My very own "Pinterest" board, if you will.

some other pages from fall, before I'd written in them

Then I just journal around the pictures.  Everything goes into my journal: verses, prayers, to-do lists, all sorts of other lists, gardening plans, quotes I like, notes to myself, menu plans, cute things the kids say, homeschooling ideas, recipes, ideas, goals, books I'm reading, schedules, knitting patterns, sketches, cards from Mark, drawings from the kids, doodling, plans for rearranging furniture and sermon notes.  It's all there.  I've tried before to keep separate journals- for instance, a separate prayer journal-- but I've decided that it's easier for me to have it all in one place.   So I've been doing it this way for years and I love it.

And some really old pages- I took these last three photos several years ago

  1. So fun! I bought a similar but smaller journal on Friday. I keep a personal one but this one will be our family journal. I plan to leave it out each day with a double page open and we will all contribute to the page whatever we want. A drawing, picture from a magazine, a quote or something we heard or said or something to remember. I plan to start tomorrow. We will see how it goes. Journey said there is going to be a ton of dinosaur drawings in the journal. In this season she is probably right :)

Hi friend. :) FUN! I like that idea, but I know that if I left out a blank notebook at our house with an invitation for everyone to contribute, it would be blank only for about 30 minutes before my little artists took over and filled it up. And I wouldn't get to write anything- which would be a bummer. I love Journey's comment about dinosaurs. Cute. Enjoy your dinosaur drawings. Those will be so fun to look back on.

  2. These are such beautiful pages that you have created, Stacy. I admire them as my notekeeping is done in spiral lined wide-ruled notebooks that do not look pretty. Thank you for sharing them with us. Please add some more photos from time to time, as I love seeing your handwriting and drawings next to the pretty pictures. :) Funny how seeing people's handwriting is so special now-a-days.

    1. Oh, Heather. You are so sweet. Thank you. I will try to remember to snap pictures. I totally agree about the handwriting. I recently received a letter from a friend (I had never before seen her handwriting) and I was astonished at how beautiful her penmanship is. I thought it was such a work of art- and such a lost craft, really. [Mine is not nearly as pretty as hers but I was inspired by the beauty she penned.]

  3. I tried posting a comment earlier and am not sure if it will end up magically showing up, but I was just saying I'm thankful you posted this because I've been wanting some journaling inspiration lately! These pages are so pretty!

    1. Oh, GOOD, Jodi! I always like seeing pictures of other peoples' journals, too-

Years ago- another blogger- (who no longer blogs)- shared her journal pages and I was inspired by them. They were much more creative than my own pages but it gave me ideas for what I could add to my own doodles and Sharpie-marker colored words.

Ann Voskamp has some fun posts on Journaling, too. Here's one link:

  4. Stacy,
Thanks for sharing this. I did this once in college.....but I've been doing the separate journals thing recently...I hate it. Where is are my lists? Where is our goals book? Where is each kid's "baby book"....I'm going to combine them. So much easier.

Yeah. The separate thing didn't work for me, either. Happy journaling. ~smile~
